NEWSPAPER STORIES FROM VICTORIAN RASTRICK

Below are a random selection of local 19th century newspaper reports. The stories are mainly about accidents in Rastrick. Some are quite humorous whilst others recount horrific details of tragic occurrences. Often, they resulted in the deaths of some people. Many of the unfortunate occurrences took place in the local quarries or textile mills. There wasn’t any health & safety in those days. We often regard some of the current regulations as ridiculous but workers in Victorian times had very little protection from the law. If a person was incapacitated for the remainder of their lives, their families often fell upon hard times. There wasn’t any welfare state to offer a person any financial assistance. They were difficult times for the working class.
