BRIDGE END CHAPEL

The majestic ashlar stone frontage of Bridge End chapel where many of ancestors were married and buried and where I was baptised
The almost buried gravestone of JOHN and MARY GOTT at Bridge End, one of the few remaining gravestones in the old churchyard

Construction of the original Bridge End chapel commenced in 1778 because the local community wanted their own non-conformist meeting place. Prior to this, the people of the Rastrick area had to travel to either Oaks Green, Rastrick or Slead Syke, Brighouse. The first chapel was capable of seating around 300 people but by 1821 the trustees deemed that it was not large enough for the congregation. A schoolroom was therefore added and this building is now used as the Bridge End Nursery. It was enlarged in 1832 when an extension was built on arches over part of the burial ground.

Such was the popularity of Bridge End that in 1854 discussions were held regarding erecting a completely new chapel. An agreement was reached whereupon the impressive new building (pictured above) opened on the 16th January 1856. It was capable of seating 1,075 people. The fortunes of Bridge End flourished for several decades but, as was the trend at that time, congregations began to dwindle after the 1st World War.

Bridge End chapel continued until 1976 when it finally closed its doors as a religious building. It then found a new lease of life as the Rastrick Squash Club.

In more recent times, the sports facility was closed down and the building was converted into luxury apartments. Part of the burial ground to the rear was converted into a car park and many of my family members including my great x 3 and great x 2 grandparents are buried there.

Many people with a family history in this area will have relatives who were either baptised, married or buried at Bridge End, sometimes all three. I have added a list of some of the early baptism and burial records which readers may wish to search.

BRIDGE END GRAVEYARD PROJECT

After the Bridge End Chapel closed in 1976, the beautiful building was eventually converted into the RASTRICK SQUASH CLUB. The owner, Fred Crowther, applied for planning permission to convert the graveyard at the rear of the chapel into a car park but despite several objections from relatives of deceased family members who are interred there, the plans were eventually approved. Part of the permission stated that Fred had to transcribe details of the 163 gravestones into a booklet that people would be able to search in years to come.

Around 30 years ago, I looked at the book whilst checking for inscription details of the grave of my great x 3 and great x 2 grandparents but soon after, the book mysteriously disappeared. Someone borrowed it from Fred and didn’t return it and despite efforts to locate the book, it seemed as though the details of the several hundred names contained within, were lost forever.

In 2019, I happened to mention the book on the Memories of Brighouse Facebook page and amazingly a lady came forward and informed me that she was in possession of the book. It suddenly re-emerged after being ‘lost’ for all those years.

The 170 or so pages which contain around 135 different surnames and 604 different named persons. The pages have been photographed by the current owner, Lucy Taylor. The pages were then transcribed by myself, Judith Farnell, John James Logan and Lucy Taylor so that visitors to this website who are researching their Rastrick and Brighouse ancestors, can search the names for free.

INDEPENDENCY AT BRIGHOUSE

A fascinating early history of Bridge End was written in 1878 by the eminent local historian of his day, J. Horsfall Turner.

It details all the early ministers lives and gives an insight into the minds of 19th century religious leaders. It describes how the chapel at Bridge End developed from a small meeting house to a popular place of worship that was frequented by many local dignitaries and business owners. It also mentions the names of many Brighouse and Rastrick families, including several family trees, which may be of interest to some of you.

The book is entitled INDEPENDENCY AT BRIGHOUSE – BRIDGE END CHAPEL – PASTORS AND PEOPLE. You can read an on-line version here.
